Makilala, North Cotabato 17 Dec 2020 – The DOST XII-Cotabato Provincial Office personnel and staff celebrated year-end thanksgiving this morning with Lolos and Lolas of ‘Kalinaw Casa Misericordia- Home for the Abandoned and Neglected Elderly’ in Makilala.

The said activity is part of the office’s Corporate Social Responsibility which DOST XII OIC-RD Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, CESE gladly encouraged.

“Doing so is one way of giving happiness among our elderly, showing them in simple yet remarkable means that we in DOST XII, whilst supporting various sectors for socio-economic development, likewise care and value them as important members of society,” Engr. Malawan said.

A birthday-like mini-party with free meal, cakes and personal care products along with surprise talent show for fun made the Lolos and Lolas expressively happy.

S&T Provincial Director Michael Mayo said, “The birthday-like theme is a cheerful reminder to them as to everyone as well that every day is a special day to give thanks for the gift of life”.

Established in 2009 primarily thru the efforts of Sr. Marie, a Catholic Religious Sister of the Congregation of the Passionist Sisters of St. Paul of the Cross, Kalinaw Casa Misericordia became permanent dwelling for elderly who were abandoned and neglected by their respective families.

Kalinaw is a bisaya term for ‘peace’ while Casa Misericordia in Italian means ‘House of Mercy’.

According to Sr. Marie, they were taking good care of a total of 14 elderly in 2019, six (6) of which were transferred to other Home for the Aged institutions after the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which caused substantial damage to structures of Kalinaw Casa Misericordia. This year in the midst of pandemic, three (3) elderly had passed away (not due to COVID-19).

Today, Sr. Marie and few of her colleagues are actively taking good care of the five (5) elderly with age ranging from 61-72, two (2) of which find it hard to walk.

“They were the youth and active individuals of the past who have taken part in molding the community we have today. Adding the fact that they have been abandoned and neglected by their respective families, celebrating blessings with them and making them happy can definitely make a difference in the lives of our beloved senior citizens”, PD Mayo said.
