DOST XII, 26 November 2020 – Joined in by almost 600 individuals from the different sectors of society, the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Celebration in Region XII was formally opened this morning.


As per data from the Secretariat, 150 graced the event face-to-face at the Greenleaf Hotel, General Santos City while 450 participated through virtual/ online.


In spite of the technical glitch experienced which was not under control, the Opening Ceremonies pushed through at the venue.


DOST XII OIC-RD Engr. Sammy Malawan, CESE, expressed his appreciation to everyone who takes part in the event amidst the unfavorable circumstances. DOST Secretary, Professor Fortunato T. de la Peña addressed the event virtually as Keynote Speaker.


Themed, ‘Agham at Teknolohiya: Sandigan ng Kalusugan, Kabuhayan, Kaayusan at Kinabukasan’, lined-up activities throughout the two-day event include the following: SETUP 2.0 and Innovation for SMARTER MSMEs; iFWD PH Enabling OFWs to Establish Technology-based Businesses; CEST in Support to EO 70; FASSSTER 2.0 and TanodCovid; Weather Hazards and  Climate Change; High School S&T Scholarship Program; and, DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Program.


“Along with the holding of this annual event, we endeavor to continuously accelerate technology adoption and stimulate innovation; enhance the R&D capacities of our institutions; increase technology transfer and strengthen our partnerships with the industry and other stakeholders,” Engr. Malawan said.


DOST XII partnered with PIA XII in convening the local media which according to Engr. Malawan, “gives life to this year’s Media Village-inspired concept”.


In his message, he briefly explained the concept as “a confined yet conducive space for social media practitioners to interact with and explore DOST’s efforts and endeavors thru the S&T Exhibit, particularly the programs, projects, activities and services which DOST XII has been implementing throughout the region”.


Engr. Malawan expressed high hopes that journalists, bloggers and other social media influencers will bring DOST XII S&T promotion efforts to a new level of increasing the awareness of the citizens on science, technology and innovation.


“We look forward that thru their works and outputs while enjoying the comfy setting and perks within the corners of our version of a Media Village, more and more people from South Central Mindanao will appreciate and support undertakings of DOST XII”, he added.


NSTW is celebrated annually per Proclamation No. 780. The weeklong nationwide celebration for this year is from November 23-November 29. 


Engr. Malawan further hopes that this event will serve as inspiration for everyone to continuously value, appreciate and support S&T endeavors towards a more progressive, healthier, safer and more resilient Region XII.
