Due to the increasing number of reported COVID19 cases in the region, The Department of Science and Technology Region XII in partnership with the Regional IATF for Emerging Infectious Disease (RIATF-EID) and the Region XII Task Force on Covid19 (RTF-COVID19), hold S-Pass Orientation cum Training for Provincial and Local Government Unit (LGU) of Region 12 last May 5, 2021 via Zoom Meeting.

“Our fight against Covid19 pandemic has been a great challenge. It has changed our protocols and we cannot expect things to be the same again. And as the number of cases in the region is increasing, it is imperative that we continuously innovate and employ innovative strategies for us to keep the economy running while keeping the number of affected cases to a minimum.” DOST XII Regional Director, Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, CESE said on his remarks.

RD Malawan also presented S-Pass ( Safe, Swift, and Smart Passage) as a travel management system initiated by the Department of Science and Technology under the leadership of Secretary, Hon. Fortunato T. de la Pena. It was developed by the DOST Regional Office No. 6 headed by the Regional Director Rowen Gelonga.

DOST’s S-PaSS was then institutionalized by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for Emerging Infectious Diseases through Resolution No. 101 s. of 2021 last February 26, 2021 as a one-stop communication and coordination platform for travelers and Local Government Units (LGUs). It was reported that 83% of the LGU’s in the country have already adopted the S-Pass, however in the Region XII, only Sultan Kudarat and Saranggani Province have adopted the system.

“I would like to encourage our dear partners in LGU’s to equip themselves with the tool to have the knowledge of who are the inbound travelers in their area as well as we assist the constituents towards ease of travel.” Engr. Malawan said.

DOST is now coordinating directly with LGUs for the activation of their accounts and for the full roll-out.
