Sixty-nine (69 ) third year college students in SOCCSKSARGEN Region passed the 2017 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program which was simultaneously conducted nationwide last October 16, 2016.
Specifically, nineteen (19) passers were from General Santos City; seventeen (17) from South Cotabato; eleven (11) from the province of North Cotabato; six (6) from Sultan Kudarat; five (5) from Sarangani and Koronadal City; three(3) from Cotabato City and Kidapawan City.
Fifty (50) of them passed the RA-10612; Ten (10) are Merit qualifiers; and six (6) passed the RA 7687.
DOST 12 Regional Director Zenaida HR Laidan said that the JLSS Program, created under the Republic Act 10612 (“Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013”) and qualifiers shall teach science and mathematics in secondary schools while the RA 7687 scholarships are awarded to poor, talented and deserving students. Meanwhile, the Merit scholarship are awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
The scholarships are open to third year college students who are currently enrolled in priority science and technology courses such as:
Agriculture, agricultural biotechnology, agricultural chemistry, agricultural engineering, agricultural and bio-systems engineering, applied mathematics, applied physics, biochemistry, biology, ceramics engineering.
Chemistry with applied computer system, chemistry with materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering.
Environmental science, fisheries, food technology, forestry, geology, geodetic engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management engineering-information technology, information technology, manufacturing engineering management-mechatronics and robotics, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mathematics, mathematics teaching.
Mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology, physics, applied physics with applied computer systems, applied physics with materials science and engineering, science teaching (biology, chemistry, physics, physical science), and statistics.
Scholars are entitled to tuition and other school fees amounting to Php10,000 per semester (P8,000 per trimestral term), book allowance, monthly stipend, clothing allowance, transportation allowance and health insurance.
New graduates of this program shall render service along their field of specialization in the country, preferably in their home region, on a full time basis for a minimum period equivalent to the length of time they enjoyed the scholarship.
They shall also be allowed to teach even without Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) eligibility but has to pass the LET within five years from the date of hiring.
